Position Overview

The Press Operator A is responsible for overseeing press performance and ensuring high-quality printing operations. This role involves setting up and operating sheet-fed offset printing presses to produce single and multicolor prints from lithographic plates. The operator will also lead and support Assistant Press Operators, feeders, and joggers to ensure smooth and efficient production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Record sheet counts and perform line clearance checks.

  • Review job orders to confirm print quantities, materials, colors, and special instructions.

  • Verify print samples against customer approvals or color standards.

  • Set plates and adjust ink fountains to ensure proper ink thickness on rollers.

  • Fill and regulate ink and dampening solution fountains.

  • Apply packing sheets to maintain proper blanket and plate cylinder alignment.

  • Install, remove, and secure printing and coating plates as required.

  • Start and operate the press while monitoring print quality, ink density, and paper alignment.

  • Set up and use scanning densitometers and spectrophotometers to maintain accurate color.

  • Make adjustments during production runs to maintain registration and color consistency.

  • Clean and maintain printing blankets, plates, and cylinders.

  • Assist with press maintenance and troubleshooting when needed.

  • Train and guide Press Operator B and C team members.

  • Follow all safety procedures and wear required PPE.

  • Maintain compliance with 5S and SQF standards, reporting any safety concerns to management.

  • Perform other duties assigned by the Printing Manager or Shift Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

  • 1–2 years of experience operating a multi-color printing press in a manufacturing environment, or equivalent training.

  • Strong mathematical skills and understanding of measurements.

  • Basic computer proficiency.

  • Good problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, see, hear, and communicate effectively throughout the shift.
